What .net is

The .net extension launched alongside .com in 1985 and was intended for network infrastructure: providers, exchange points and the services that keep the network running. The restriction was dropped early, and Verisign runs this registry too.

Today .net is taken for two reasons: as a technical home for services and APIs, and as the fallback when the matching .com is gone. Far more names are free here, and the renewal price stays close to the registration price, which matters more than any promotion once the second year arrives.
